The University of Virginia Library seeks a dynamic, collegial and highly skilled professional to serve as the Associate Director for Research Data Services & Social, Natural & Engineering Sciences. The University of Virginia Library establishes deep connections with faculty and students in ways that foster excellence in current and emerging research, scholarship, teaching and learning. To advance and promote existing services to enhance research across the lifecycle and across all levels of research expertise, the employee in this position will help lead our engagement efforts with campus-wide programs and initiatives, both on and off campus, seeking to establish and strengthen relationships with research support centers and position the Library as a key partner; work closely with a network of research infrastructure support resources, experts and stakeholders to identify university-wide needs and envision ways the Library can contribute to collective solutions; promote greater awareness of library expertise, services and resources among our external partners, as well as further awareness of the resources, services and expertise of our partners among Library colleagues, making the Library an increasingly central hub of university information and support beyond the resources within the Library; supervise several team members engaged in cross-disciplinary services within Research Data Services; and maintain familiarity with the work of the liaisons in the Social, Natural and Engineering Sciences team.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Leadership and Management: Manage professional staff within Research Data Services. Contribute to department and library-wide communication about RDS and SNE directions, decisions and partnerships. As part of the RDS and SNE Leadership Team, work with the Director to provide direction and cohesion for RDS and SNE and support across teams.
  • Leadership in Campus-wide Services: Provide leadership to develop and maintain campus-wide partnerships with research support centers. Identify university-wide research needs and envision ways the Library can contribute to collective solutions, including increasing public access to the products of university research. Promote awareness among Library colleagues of the resources, expertise and services provided by partners. Educate faculty, students, staff, campus partners and outside collaborators about a range of Library services, including information, digital and data literacy; data management planning, sharing and archiving; data analytics; and computation.
  • Engagement and Scholarship: Manage RDS and SNE education outreach efforts to develop and offer Library-sponsored classes and workshops to support information and data literacies across the university. Respond to faculty, students and staff on research information requests, data management and scholarly communication needs, and grant requirements for data sharing and research impact. Contribute to Library and departmental-wide efforts as needed.


  • An advanced degree in a science, social scienc, or engineering discipline or an MLS with evidence of a strong background in science, social science or engineering.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student population.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience relevant to this position with sufficient experience in scientific research to demonstrate mastery of the scientific method and research practices.
  • Familiarity with data sources for the sciences, social sciences or engineering; data wrangling tools and processes; and data analytic tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of tools and technologies common in the sciences; for example, programming languages, database management systems and high-performance computing environments.
  • Teaching experience and competence in translating technical knowledge and discipline-based research methodologies to undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff.
  • Competence in public speaking and providing instruction, both formal and informal, to varying audiences and skill levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuing to learn and evolve in this role.

  • Two or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of data curation practices, including data management planning, documentation and archiving, as well as of scientific workflows.
  •  Experience with sponsored research, including outreach and education for broader impact requirements.
  • Understanding of open science practices, open access publishing and sustainable scholarship.
  • Familiarity with programming environments for R or Python.

Anticipated hiring range: $74,000 - $84,000

The selected applicant will be required to complete a background check prior to their first day of employment per University policy.
