Assistant Director of Prospect Management

UVA's Office of University Advancement seeks applications for an Assistant Director of Prospect Management to join the Advancement Services team. Reporting to the Director for Prospect Development, this individual will help develop and execute the tasks necessary to drive a modern advancement prospect management strategy. The Assistant Director (AD) will use data analysis, reporting, and modern research tools to work with development officers on their prospect management needs and drive pipeline development. They will work closely with development officers to ensure movement within portfolios, collaborating directly with gift officers on goal-setting and workplan development. ADs are responsible for helping maintain a level of portfolio movement that will help gift officers achieve their goals. The AD provides customer service, individual consultation, information, and data management support to help gift officers work effectively and meet fundraising goals. The AD is an individual contributor, responsible for cultivating and maintaining business relationships with a wide variety of advancement professionals. The AD is a member of a diverse team of professionals who focus on prospect management, prospect research, and applied data analysis.

Knowledge, skills and abilities to execute the roles & responsibilities of this position:

Industry Knowledge
  • Experience in prospect research and prospect management. Higher education experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all areas of prospect development, including research, prospect management, and analytics. Possesses an understanding of how these areas of the business work together to serve the needs of the frontline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising principles, especially in a complex higher education environment.
  • Ability to translate data into actionable intelligence to drive fundraising activity.
  • Creative professional who takes measured risks, evaluates results, and adjusts as indicated. Collaborates with others to produce the very best products and information.
  • Understands constituent behaviors. Can identify potential interests based on behavioral data related to constituents' contributions of time, talent, and treasure.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain, analyze, and interpret information from a broad range of sources in order to provide actionable information to gift officers.
  • Demonstrated experience with a broad array of digital platforms, such as Evertrue, Ellucian Advance, Cognos, Salesforce, ResearchPoint, iWave, and Tableau.

Professional Skills
  • Must have a high school diploma with at least five years of relevant experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate between frontline fundraisers, data analysts, and technical personnel.
  • Must possess ability to contextualize business needs, evaluate and modify current practices, and create solutions that work across the Advancement Community.
  • Proven collaborator and business partner. Ability to work with individuals across all areas of Advancement (including Operations, Development, Engagement, and Annual Giving).
  • Collegial team player who works well across teams in a matrixed environment of project-based work, cross-functional teams, agile methodology, and professional project management.
  • Possesses a strong customer service orientation.
  • Has experience working in a decentralized environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Builds trust and appropriately uses influence to drive results.

  • Excellent communicator, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Data-savvy advancement professional who can translate across technical and non-technical domains.
  • Tech savvy; comfortable with a variety of tools and resources.

External partners: development officers (annual, major, and principal), chief development officers, engagement officers, development associates, other operations teams (digital, technology, finance, training, gift processing).

This is an exempt-level, benefited position. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

Anticipated hiring range of $75K - $85K
