Assistant / Associate Director of Equity and Belonging

The School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of Virginia seeks an Assistant or Associate Director of Equity and Belonging. The position serves as a visionary, inclusive, innovative, and process-oriented leader who supports the School of Data Science's efforts to foster a sense of belonging and inclusion in data science. While promoting community connection and outreach, this role utilizes quality, high-impact, and assessment-driven educational, developmental, and cultural programs and services to support belonging, inclusion, equity, and access. The Assistant/Associate Director is responsible for the management and supervision of staff, students, and office space, as well as the coordination of the related operational functions; ensures tracking, reporting, and evaluation of all related programs and services.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support implementation of SDS inclusive excellence plan.
  • Serve as active and ongoing member of SDS Inclusive Excellence Team.
  • Monitor and report on relevant data/metrics.
  • Applies equity, inclusion, and belonging concepts to the development of training curriculum and may assist with organization training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Support development of annual belonging survey.
  • Support expansion of partnerships and relationships broadening access to data science.
  • Support development and implementation of framework for SDS summer bridge programming.
  • Draw upon SDS curriculum, and collaborates with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and student leaders to serve as a thought-partner to develop, organize and deliver programming for students in all programs to address climate issues and equip students to be inclusive leaders in a diverse world.
  • Empower student-facing staff to execute some programming.
  • Consult with students on diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility issues.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive calendar of social and educational programming, in support of a student learning community.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of experience OR a high school diploma and 9 years of experience.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, detail-oriented, passionate, and team oriented.
  • Proficient at using data to drive decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and leading collaborative partnerships.
  • Experience in evidence-based program modeling or design, development and evaluation.
  • Superior competency in diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and best practices across multiple domains.
  • Strong self-starter, and enthusiastic toward the creation of new initiatives and interest and ability to drive organizational change.
  • Demonstrated experience building, leading, motivating, and mentoring teams of all skill and experience levels; ability to empower staff to elevate their level of responsibility, span of control and performance.
  • Programming experience related to diversity and belonging is preferred.

 

Anticipated hiring range: $75,000-$83,000
