The Center for Comparative Medicine is looking for an Animal Caregiver to provide animal care to research animals in a laboratory setting. The Animal Caregiver is responsible for providing animal husbandry and general sanitation for the facility which includes cage-wash duties, use of the sterilizer and general facility upkeep. Candidates must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. and be comfortable working with lab animals, specifically mice. This position requires standing nearly all day and performing highly repetitive movements of the arms, back and waist. Incumbents will be expected to work a rotating schedule which includes a combination of weekday, weekend, and holiday coverage.

Anticipated Salary: $15/hour with UVA Benefits

Responsibilities:

• Inspection and maintenance of animals, disposal of carcasses, tracking and recording data, and keeping detailed records.

• Monitor animal husbandry activities.

• Ensure that daily activities are conducted according to biosafety procedures.

• When required, administer experimental treatments to animals via gavage or injection.

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: One year of lab experience is preferred.

Licensure: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred.

Physical Requirements: This job requires standing nearly all day and performing highly repetitive movements of the arms, back and waist. Rodent caging is vertically stacked from floor level to approximately 6 feet in height.
