Advanced Practice Provider - Interventional Radiology

UVA Medical Center is currently recruiting for a Physician Assistant for the Interventional Radiology Division in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging. In addition, the Physician Assistant will assist the Body Imaging Division's coverage of image-guided procedures by taking assignment of the Body inpatient procedure pager.

This position will report to the Director, Division of Angio/Interventional Radiology. The incumbent will assist in the care of both inpatient and outpatient setting as outlined in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities below and will participate in all aspects of patient care as indicated. The incumbent will also have direct reporting responsibility to the Primary Attending Physician of the day for all duties, but will also provide ancillary support to other physicians within the Department.


Performs Interventional Procedures

  • Conducts minor procedures (under the direction and supervision of the attending physician) including: insertion, revision and removal of peripherally inserted central catheters, temporary central venous lines, tunneled catheters, and sub-cutaneous port catheters.
  • Exchange of previously placed biliary and nephrostomy drainage catheters.
  • These procedures skills include prescribing and supervising conscious sedation.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency care until the arrival of the supervising physician.
  • Functions as a first or second assistant in the interventional radiology suite in performing procedures, including suturing and closure of incisions.


Provides Medical Management

  • Venous access consults for inpatients
  • Outpatient pre-procedure evaluation for venous access and other procedures
  • Assists with preparation of patients for procedures performed in the interventional radiology suite by obtaining consents, skin preparation and administration of local anesthesia.
  • Completes individual or joins group rounds on all pertinent patients related to the service, with special attention to venous access patients
  • Outpatient follow up as needed for venous access patients
  • Provides routine medical management of inpatient care whenever necessary by evaluating and managing patients (with direct communication with the supervising interventional radiologist), ordering diagnostic tests, labs x-ray studies, medications (within the scope of the PA license), activity orders, physical therapy orders, discharge planning, and nutrition.
  • Provides timely and complete communication to referring and primary care physicians.
  • Communication of treatment plans with Interventional Radiology team,
  • Provides communication to procedure patient families.
  • Serves as a resource person in the department and throughout the hospital for on venous access.
  • Completes appropriate documentation on all evaluations and services rendered in the electronic medical record, inclusive of informed consents.
  • Obtains appropriate consultation from specialty services after conferring with the appropriate interventional radiology attending.


Participates in Clinical Research

  • Provides staff and clinical service education for new protocols related to interventional radiology clinical trials.
  • Assists in organizing patients for clinical trials related procedures and protocols.


Acts as a Resource Person for Outpatient Clinic

  • Expedites disposition by identifying patient family issues for referral to appropriate personnel for transportation, housing, psychosocial, financial, or other social services related issues.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries on potential consultation, patients previously cared for by the division, while providing appropriate medical care or counseling for the patient, family, or referring physician.
  • Acts as a resource person throughout the hospital and community for information with regard to interventional radiology, especially as it relates to venous access.
  • Assists in providing longitudinal care and follow-up of patients in accordance with desires of the attending interventional radiology physician.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • The incumbent in this position will work at the University Hospital and affiliated facilities.
Position Compensation Range: $84,364.80 - $134,992.00 Annual


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master's Degree as an Advance Practice Provider: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Experience: One to two years minimum experience as an Advanced Practice Provider Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant preferred including experience working in Radiology.
Licensure:

  • License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, as set forth by the state of Virginia.
  • If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of the UVA Medical Center, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and the appropriate certifying bodies.
  • Must be enrolled with all payers through Delegated Credentialing and can participate in Medicaid and Medicare for billing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Current PALS/NRP, as required specific to position.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.


COVID Vaccination Requirement

Due to the scope of President Biden's Executive Order 14042 issued in early September, all University employees, including remote employees, must receive their final vaccination dose by January 4, 2022, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. The University has updated policy SEC-045 to reflect these new requirements.

If hired by the Academic Division, excluding School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UVA Physicians Group, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to be vaccinated by January 4, 2022.
