The Administrator of Advanced Practice Providers (AAPP) is the clinical expert and system-level administrative leader responsible for the oversight of advanced practice providers within UVA Health. The Director serves as an expert resource for issues related to Advanced Practice Provider (APP) scope of practice, as well as other practice issues, and creates an environment that supports participative management and promotes professional development for all staff. This individual will have consultee and/or direct responsibility for patient care, onboarding, orientation, credentialing, professional development, education, quality, regulatory compliance, and research and development of financial sustainability business models for all APPs. The AAPP will collaborate with Medical Center Finance and system-level operational leaders on items related to APP workforce business models, billing, and productivity metrics.

Strategic Oversight
  • The AAPP is a licensed independent practitioner and administrator. The central responsibility of this role is to serve as a single point of contact, liaison, and expert for matters specific to APPs throughout UVA Health.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), department chairs, Medical Directors, service line lead physicians, Administrators and other key leadership, the AAPP will facilitate the design and implementation of data-based care delivery systems and processes. These innovative systems will utilize benchmarking data to maximize quality and safety outcomes for patients while ensuring adequate and appropriate APP staffing models, facilities, and space. The CAPP will also participate in the continuous refinement of such models across the care continuum.
  • The AAPP, in partnership with the attending medical staff, will provide consultation and direction regarding the optimization and utilization of APPs in order for each clinical area to meet Health System goals and objectives.
  • In collaboration with system leaders, the AAPP establishes strategic goals and expectations for APP future needs and growth, program development, and employee engagement, while expanding access to care.
  • Addresses barriers to full scope, top-of-license practice for APPs.
  • Complies with, role models, and enforces the behavioral standards for service excellence, including the implementation of standard work and Lean methodology.
  • Attends selected committees to promote, develop, and maintain the APP perspective and role within the Health System. Represents the APP voice during these meetings on a range of patient-related topics, such as patient satisfaction, workforce quality improvement initiatives, workflow efficiencies, and clinical information systems.

  • Direct Reports: Directs and supervises the work of APP leaders (directors and managers) and APPs at large.
  • Indirect Reports: The AAPP uses both indirect influence and consultative appointments to manage frontline APPs that do not have a direct reporting line.

Professional Development
  • Establishes and maintain relationships with UVA's School of Nursing faculty and APP students and is involved in planning for APP student practicum placements.
  • Partners with SON and SOM to foster interprofessional education opportunities.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of Advanced Practice continuing education programs by partnering with the SON and SOM to coordinate at least one annual IP educational opportunity that grants related CEUs.
  • Collaborates with the SON and SOM to identify and participate in quality care and research projects across the UVA Health System and to serve as an adjunct faculty member.
  • Partners with the Director of APP Education and Fellowships to build relationships and facilitate outreach opportunities to graduate nursing programs for recruitment and clinical site utilization.
  • Mentors and supports APPs in clinical practice, leadership development, initiating or conducting clinical research, writing for publication, developing poster or podium presentations, and grant proposal writing.

Healthcare Regulations and Human Resource Management
  • Responsible for understanding and communicating an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local legislative and regulatory requirements affecting APPs. Promulgates advanced knowledge of institutional bylaws, state legislation, licensure, specialty practice standards, scope of practice, certifications, ethical standards, and best practices.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Staff Office in overseeing APP licensure, credentialing, regulatory, and legislative processes. Facilitates compliance within national, state, and UVA Health regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborates with HR to coordinate recruitment, hiring, onboarding, orientation, competency assessment, and performance development for new APPs within UVA Health.
  • Partners with Human Resources to monitor and evaluate turnover and recruiting trends and proactively address workforce challenges.
  • Establishes consistent job descriptions, roles, and responsibilities for APP leaders (directors and managers) in collaboration with senior leadership.

  • Provides strategic leadership, direction, support, and bidirectional communication with APPs, APP leaders, the APP Council and Professional Nursing Staff Organization (PNSO) in work plan development, decision-making, fiscal planning, and professional development.
  • Facilitates bidirectional communication between medical leaders, administrators, and APP groups. Serves as a liaison to advocate for APP interests and needs as a group. Consistently maintains diplomacy and continually encourages mutual respect and collaboration within and across roles, divisions, departments, and UVA Health as a system.
  • Provides orientation, mentorship, and direction to APP leaders within UVA Health.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of human resources management policies and the ability to evaluate and document staff issues related to performance, as well as decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Organizes and/or leads quarterly APP Leadership group meetings.
  • Collaborates with the University Physicians Group (UPG) and UVA Medical Center to address APP workforce issues across the continuum of care.

Fiscal Management
  • Responsible for meeting all fiduciary obligations and proper fiscal management with a focus on quality improvement and cost-effectiveness.
  • Participates in the annual budgeting process.
  • Develops, manages, and meets annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Ensures efficient operation of APP resource allocations and profitability.
  • Monitors APP billing and reimbursement. Works collaboratively with departmental leaders, compliance and billing, and administrators to develop or revise systems or procedures to achieve maximum utilization and efficacy of APPs.

Position Compensation Range: $149,801.60 - $239,678.40 Annually

  • Education: Master's degree required. Doctorate preferred.
  • Experience: 10 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider. Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic medical center or other complex health system.
  • Licensure: Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification. National specialty certification by a recognized certification center.

Job requires standing for prolonged periods and frequently walking/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 20-50 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
